History
How it began
1907
Argentina’s National Congress passed Law 5142, which established a free trade zone within the Port of La Plata area.
Companies based there could trade internationally without paying duties or tariffs.
It was an innovative tool for the continent, designed to connect the country’s emerging production with international markets.
1991
The government of the Province of Buenos Aires took up the initiative again and drove its regulation and launch.
1993
The early-century law was regulated.
Provincial Decree 4588/1993 created the La Plata Free Zone Administration and Operating Entity (Ente de Administración y Explotación de la Zona Franca de La Plata). With this step, the Province became a pioneer in the development of Argentina’s free zones.
1994
Law 24331 gave every province the option of having its own free zone.
1995
A national and international public tender was called for the operation of the La Plata Free Zone (Provincial Decree 1331/95).
1996
The concession was awarded for 25 years (Provincial Decree 2067/96) and possession of the zone was taken.
Operations were later carried on by Buenos Aires Zona Franca La Plata S.A.
1997
Trade Up built its first 2,000 m² warehouse in the La Plata Free Zone.
Today
A reality that keeps growing
What began as a law in 1907 is now a zone that keeps growing.
